Kuntilanak: The Monstrous Ghosts of Those Who Die in Childbirth
The Kuntilanak is an extraordinarily malevolent spirit found in Malaysian folklore. A Kuntilanak is the ghost of a pregnant woman who died in childbirth or died from complications resulting from pregnancy. The Malaysian word for a Kuntilanak is Pontijanak which means pregnant. Kuntilanaks are usually seen either crying or laughing hysterically. They are often found in old buildings and and are sometimes said to kidnap and devour small children.
The Kuntilanak usually appears as a beautiful young woman and this makes her more beguiling to her potential victims. The smell of fragrant flowers follow them wherever they go. They use their many charms to seduce men and they are often found by unscrupulous men looking for a good time. Men find them wandering the side of the road and when the men pick the ghost up the men are rarely heard from again. The Kuntilanak also enjoy harming pregnant women and causing miscarriages. Pregnant women are most vulnerable to Kuntilanak when they are traveling and the only way a pregnant woman can protect herself is to carry nails or scissors with her at all times. If the nail or scissors are driven into the base of the Kuntilanak's skull and left there it will drive the evil from the ghost and she will become a woman again until the nail is removed.
Ever the friendly ghost, when the Kuntilanak kills its victims it usually digs its fingernails into its victim's stomach and pulls out their intended's guts and gorges herself on them. In the case of men, the kuntilanak often pulls off the genitals, the source of her unfortunate pregnancy and death, and devours those first. Some argue the kuntilanak is more of a vampire than a ghost because it must feed on the living to continue its preternatural existence, but the images and stories of visitations of Kuntilanak's are more consistent with ghost stories than vampire stories. Either way, if you run into a lonely woman crying on the road or wailing like a baby it is probably best to carry a few nails with you because the kuntilanak sounds like a horrific ghost to encounter. As someone whose been through a terrible childbirth experience, I can understand where these nasty pregnant ghosts are coming from. I certainly wanted to rip out someones guts halfway through my labor.

How to Qualify for Student Loan Forgiveness
To most, loans are the only solution to pay their tuition fees and complete education. Student loans also help students pay for books and living expenses while schooling. Even though these loans are refunded at low interest rates, they can be a burden depending on the job, salary, or how fiscally savvy an individual is.
If you find yourself forced to live below your means or struggling to pay bills, applying for loan forgiveness will ease the financial encumbrance. Not everyone qualifies for loan forgiveness but most public servants do. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) can be a thank you gift to public servants for dedicating their time and energy serving their country.
Organizations that offer student loan forgiveness
The following are not the only organizations that will offer loan forgiveness. Therefore, it's wise to consult with your employer, or carry out research online to find if your profession qualifies for loan forgiveness.
• The Association of Medical Colleges
• The American Federation of Teachers
• Providers of Intervention Services for Disabled Students
• Peace Corps Financial Benefit and Loan Deferment
• Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP)
• National Health Services Corp
• Head Start Staff Student Loan Forgiveness Program
• College Cost Reduction and Access Act
• Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness
• Armed Forces Student Loan Forgiveness Programs
• Americorps
• American Bar Association
According to the AES, “loan forgiveness programs encourage students to pursue an education that will lead to employment in specific occupations.” Loan forgiveness programs focus towards forgiving all or part of the loan as long as the borrower fulfills specific professional requirements. The government also uses loan forgiveness to increase personnel in areas that lack enough. An example is nursing shortage in the U.S.
The programs are only applicable to students who secured loans through the government. Such loans include Federal Ford Loan, Federal Stafford Loan, Federal Consolidation Loans, and Federal PLUS Loan. However, you qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness only if you have already made 120 payments under any of the programs while still employed although they don’t have to be concurrent.
To qualify for Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program, health professionals should sign a two-year contract with an Indian health program. The program offers up to $48,000 coverage on student loans.
The Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Program will cover 20% of a borrower’s loan after serving two years, 20% for the next three years, and 30% onwards. To qualify, one must have served in a childcare facility and hold an early childhood education bachelor's or associate degree.
For vets, the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) can offer up to $25,000 yearly. For approval, one has to serve in the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program helps qualified nurses pay up to 60% of their education loan balance. The catch is they have to commit to a two-year contract and get 25% for a third year.

A Medical Center Mystery
About
"ICU patients always died in the same bed on Sundays at 11 a.m., regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors. No one could solve the mystery. Mr. Licauco and the Ateneo paranormal folks were called. They arrived armed with special photographic equipment, infrared devices and motion sensitive radar to detect any presence, so on Sunday, a few minutes before 11 a.m., doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to know what the mystery was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses and prayer books to ward off evil spirits. "When the clock struck 11, Mang Jose, a part-time Sunday janitor, entered the room, unplugged the life support system and plugged in the vacuum cleaner." |
Me? Yes. That's the reason why I searched some details that can support the text message I received. Actually I got it a long time ago, and it was only now that I read it again.
According to the message, every patient dies in ICU every 11 AM, Sunday, whatever reason death may cause.
It mentioned a doctor named Dr. Licauco, perhaps his full name is Jaime T. Licauco. He is a paranormal expert (a parapsychologist), President of Philippine Paranormal Research Society, Inc., and a columnist in Inquirer Lifestyle. Other than that, I knew nothing about him. It also mentioned together with Mr. Licauco, the
Ateneo paranormal folks. I don't know about them.
I found an article in a News website in the Philippines. He also received the same message, and searched everything about it.
News
I RECENTLY got a text message titled ?Mystery at a Medical Center? from a well known ophthalmologist. The message read: ICU patients always died in the same bed on Sundays at 11 a.m., regardless of their medical condition. I replied to the female ophthalmologist who had sent me the text, ?I didn?t know that story is still being circulated around.? I explained to her that the joke first appeared on the Internet maybe five years ago in the US. It carried names of well-known American parapsychologists. Somebody had forwarded to me a copy of that Internet joke. Soon it was used by compilers of a bestselling series of pamphlets on ?True Philippine Ghost Stories.? But they changed the name of the American hospital to Makati Medical Center and the names of the parapsychologists to sometimes Jaime Bulatao or Tony Perez and the spirit questors and myself. I thought the story had died a natural death. But many years later, I found out it is still very much alive, this time in text jokes. I am simply amused by such stories and hope people see the obvious jest. Strangers But urban legends apparently die hard. And some have been going on about me without my knowledge. I am usually the last to know. For example, I bumped into a group of strangers coming out of a Greenbelt restaurant years ago. One of them recognized me and greeted. ?Do you remember me?? he asked. I apologized and said, ?No I?m sorry, but I don?t.? He then told me he could not forget meeting me in a restaurant three months before former Sen. Ninoy Aquino came back to the Philippines. He said that I told him and six other people that if Ninoy came back to the Philippines, he would be assassinated. I said that?I asked incredulously. Yes,he emphatically replied. There were six of us who heard you say that. ?I?m sorry.? I told him. ?I don?t remember having said that.? And then I walked away from them. I learned from my son Jolan Alexander, now a businessman, that he had been told the story on two separate occasions that I once hit a baseball so hard it flew high up in the sky and was never recovered. When Jolan told me about that, I merely laughed because I have never played baseball, not even in my dreams! Relieved Here?s another recent example which took place only months ago. I went to a medical doctor who was a practitioner of holistic medicine and Chinese acupuncture. There was a female patient in the treatment room. When we were introduced, she said she knew me; we were neighbors in same office building in Makati. She said she was then scheduled for operation for cancer and I supposedly told her not to undergo the operation because she didn?t need it. Because of my advice. she said she didn?t undergo the operation. ?And what happened?? I nervously asked. ?You were right!? she replied. ?It turned out I didn?t need the operation after all.? I was relieved but at the same time puzzled because I would never tell anyone, specially someone I hardly know, not to undergo a medical surgery. I don?t remember that incident at all. But she was very sure that conversation took place in that building. Maybe that was another urban legend that has developed around my persona or character. I?ve been told that some people say I can read minds, tell the future, heal the sick and talk to the dead. If I could do all those things, I probably would have a long line of people waiting outside my door. I don?t know how many others are being circulated that I am not aware of. |

Still Learning
Just spent another few weeks observing college life while invigilating for the January exams. I've learnt another few facts about students:
Some don't know the meaning of the phrase “Stop writing.”
Some can't read an analogue clock.
Some think it's o.k. to exit a room and immediately stop to have a conversation despite the fact there are two hundred others trying to get out as well.
Many of them appreciate the efforts we put in to ensure they get the sort of exam conditions in which they can do their very best.
Quite a few are willing to battle through severe weather conditions to get to college.
Most of them work bloody hard.
On writing matters:
In early January I ran a workshop at Nottingham Writers' Club which seemed to go down quite well. The members enjoyed it and produced some wonderful pieces of writing in a very short time.
Marion Clark at Yours magazine has accepted another story for the 2014 Yearbook.
I've been informed that my story due to be published in People's Friend will appear in the 9th February edition.
Looking forward to some brighter weather which lifts the spirit and boosts the creative mind.

Insatiable: The Magazine of Paranormal Desires
I have been a fan of White Cat Publications for some time. They have a wonderful collection of literary magazines for those who have a taste for the paranormal or the otherworldly. I have even been lucky enough to write a column for White Cat for a while. All of this is why I'm thrilled to have been given the opportunity to be the editor of the new White Cat Magazine, Insatiable: The Magazine of Paranormal Desires.
Insatiable is primarily dedicated to quality paranormal fiction with a romantic or erotic twist. I've spent my last week reading all kinds of submissions and I have to say that I am thrilled by the quality of the submissions to the magazine and I believe that this is and will continue to be an outstanding publication. A magazine can only be as good as its writers and if I continue to receive submissions of this quality, the magazine will be amazing. The first issue of Insatiable was fabulous and if you have any interest you should take a peak at: http://www.whitecatpublications.com/?wpsc-product=insatiable-premiere-issue
Due to this change in my paranormal interests, periodically I will make announcements regarding Insatiable on this blog. Insatiable magazine is currently open to submissions and I am now reviewing submissions. If you are a writer who loves the paranormal, please consider submitting your work. You can find submission guidelines at: http://www.whitecatpublications.com/?page_id=1995
